WILL SUZANNE BONAMICI TAKE A POSITION ON SOUTH KOREA TRADE
AGREEMENT BEFORE TODAY’S VOTE?

Oregon’s economy depends on trade, and voters deserve to know

Portland, OR - Today, the U.S. House of Representatives will vote on a bill to expand trade  between Oregon and South Korea, our 5th largest export market.  With Oregon’s economy on the ropes, trade is one of Oregon’s important economic growth opportunities.  Even the liberal Brookings Institution estimates that 268,000 Portland-area jobs depend on trade.

Yet, 1st Congressional District candidate Suzanne Bonamici can’t seem to get her mind around the issue, or tell voters how she would vote on the most important trade bill for Oregon in 15 years.

At every congressional debate so far, all of the candidates have taken a position in support or opposition to the trade agreement with South Korea.  All except Senator Bonamici, that is.

How would Suzanne Bonamici vote?  She’s not saying – apparently hoping that after Congress  votes today, the issue will go away and she can just duck the issue altogether.

“How can the voters of Oregon’s 1st Congressional District possibly vote for someone who refuses to answer a simple, straightforward policy question on a critical issue for Oregon’s economy, asked Oregon Republican Party spokesman Greg Leo.  “This evasive behavior is exactly what we have come to expect from career politicians. This is the same type of weak leadership we had from our last Congressman.  Voters deserve better."

“This is what happens when Bonamici’s 98% party-line voting record collides with her 100% AFL-CIO voting record that she boasted about in the debate the union hosted earlier this month,” spokesman Leo continued. “Will she side with Big Labor or with President Obama, who understands that this trade agreement will create jobs in Oregon?”

OREGON TO HOST FIRST GLOBAL REPUBLICAN
PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE

Oregon Republican Party, The Washington Times, PBS, NPR, and OPB
will provide unprecedented national and international coverage

Portland, OR - Oregon Republican Party Chairman Allen Alley announced today that the Republican National Committee has approved a proposal by the Oregon GOP to host a Presidential Primary debate in Portland, Oregon on Monday, March 19th, at 6:00 PM PST.

This 90-minute debate between the Republican candidates for president is offered in cooperation with the Oregon Public Broadcasting (OPB), Public Broadcasting Service (PBS), NPR, and print and digital partner, The Washington Times.
This debate will likely be the only Republican Presidential Primary debate to reach all Americans, not just those who subscribe to cable and/or satellite television services.  The 350 television stations affiliated with PBS reach 99 percent of the population of the United States, and are watched by 124 million people each month. NPR and its 270 member radio stations reach a weekly audience of over 33 million listeners. Millions more watch and listen online at PBS.org and NPR.org.

The Oregon Republican Party-hosted debate will also have a global reach. It will be made available to Armed Forces Radio and TV, Voice of America and foreign broadcasters such as the BBC for Americans overseas. In addition, simultaneous Spanish language translations will be available to Hispanic viewers through secondary audio channels.

“By forming this unique coalition of media partners, the Oregon GOP is demonstrating the kind of leadership that Americans are looking for,” said Allen Alley, Chairman of the Oregon Republican Party. “Republicans, Democrats and Independents all have an interest in learning more about the philosophies and policies of the Republican Presidential candidates. Our media partners have an unprecedented ability to bring the debate into living rooms all over the world.
"I am excited also that our media partners have the capability to fully utilize internet streaming technology and their distribution networks to reach Americans serving our country and doing business in every corner of the world. I cannot think of a place better suited to host this uniquely global debate than Oregon."

None of the Republican candidates are expected to have won the 1,191 delegates necessary for nomination under Republican Party rules by the March 19th event date, making this debate pivotal for a candidate to eventually win the Republican nomination.

ORP Memorial Day 2011 Message: Giving Thanks to those who sacrificed

From the Civil War to today, Memorial Day is a day to
give thanks to those who sacrificed for our freedoms

This Memorial Day weekend, families across America will be firing up their grills and celebrating the beginning of summer. But as we gather together, let us all remember the true meaning of this holiday – to humbly reflect on those who have sacrificed their lives for our country’s freedom and security.

With active war zones in Iraq and Afghanistan, Memorial Day is made especially meaningful. More than 1.5 million brave men and women serve in as soldiers, sailors, airmen, and coast guardsmen, working both abroad and here at home. With quiet dignity and honor, they continue to serve. Many have paid the ultimate sacrifice.

Here are some things that you may consider doing to honor our heroes on Memorial Day:
•    Visit a cemetery and place a flag, flowers and a wreath at a veteran’s grave
•    Take your children to a battlefield, war memorial, or parade
•    Thank a soldier for his or her service
•    Fly the American Flag at half-staff until noon
•    Fly the POW/MIA Flag underneath the American Flag

•    Participate in the moment of national remembrance at 3pm local time

Talk to your children and grandchildren about what the day means. Though we can never repay our soldiers for what they have given our country, we can show our respect and be grateful that we live in the country they helped defend. It’s our responsibility and our solemn duty to remember their sacrifices.

On behalf of the Oregon Republican Party, please join us in honoring the men and women of our military who have demonstrated the true strength and determination of the American spirit. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers, and always remember their brave families who carry on and endure the prolonged absence of their loved ones.

Thank you and have a safe and enjoyable weekend, from the Oregon Republican Party
