Why Won't DeFazio Debate Republican Candidate Art Robinson?
Media Alert
For Immediate Release August 24, 2010
Will Peter DeFazio debate Art Robinson?
Oregon voters are anxious to hear genuine debate between the candidates.
DeFazio a "No Show" for first two scheduled debates - Over 1,000 Oregon
voters in attendance.
Five more debates scheduled - will Peter DeFazio meet the challenge?
Cave Junction, Or-Art Robinson believes it is essential for each citizen to
directly compare the two candidates for U.S. Congress in order to make an
informed decision. For this reason, seven total debates have been scheduled
- one in each county of District 4. So far, Robinson's opponent has failed
to show up for the August 12th debate in Eugene, attended by 600 voters, and
the August 17th debate in Roseburg, attended by 400 voters.
The next two scheduled debates will be held in Brookings, August 31st, 6:00
pm at the Best Western Beachfront Inn, 16008 Boat Basin Road, Brookings and
North Bend, September 2nd, 6:00 pm at the North Bend Community Center, 2222
Broadway Street, North Bend. Debates will also be held in Corvallis,
Albany, and Grants Pass. These scheduled debates will use the standard
American debating rules employed in all accredited debates today, including
all high school and college debates. Each debater speaks in alternating
equal timed intervals. The intervals vary from 3 to 9 minutes, giving time
for reasoned argument. The debaters can question each other or use their
time in any way they choose. A time keeper referees the debate and no one
else is involved.
So why hasn't DeFazio shown up? So far, he has been insisting on alternate
formats that do not allow actual debate - debate where Robinson can
challenge him with direct questions and where speaking intervals are long
enough for reasoned argument. DeFazio has resisted everything except
pre-filtered, third party questions and short, sound-bite response
intervals.
Under pressure, Peter DeFazio sought out and arranged four "candidate
forums", which he calls debates. In fact, these are not real debates;
rather, they are sound-bite events. Even so, Art Robinson has confirmed his
participation in these forums. The first one is hosted by the City Club of
Eugene on September 10th at the Eugene Hilton. Peter DeFazio has stated that
he will attend this event.
In its current form, this September 10th event is not an actual debate. In
the words of the president-elect of the City Club of Eugene, Mary Leighton,
"Instead of calling it a debate, let's call it a forum".
The public is invited to all of these debates and "forums".
Costs of "forums" may vary dependent upon the sponsors.
