WHEN "NO" MEANS "YES"
Democrats attempt to mislead and confuse voters on proposed tax referendum
PORTLAND, Ore. – In the final hours of the 2009 Oregon Legislative session, the democrats have crafted a bill deliberately aimed at misleading and confusing voters in the proposed upcoming tax referendums. Oregon Republican Party Chairman Bob Tiernan said: “This is one of the most cynical manipulations of the electoral process that has ever been attempted in Oregon. This is a blatant attempt to confuse Oregon voters into supporting unpopular democrat tax increases.”
The new language that has been added to HB 2414 would apply to any new laws that are referred to the ballot, changing the meaning of a vote in Oregon. If passed, it will apply to the tax measures that are likely to be referred to the voters. “The democrats in Salem are willing to deceive voters in order to keep the huge, unnecessary tax increase from being defeated. In many ways, the democrats need to learn that ‘no means no’,” Chairman Tiernan said.
“Public trust of the legislature is at an all time low. Raising unnecessary taxes to support the democrats unpopular agenda and spending plan, at a time when Oregonians can least afford higher taxes is unconscionable. The democrats are attempting to make a mockery of Oregon’s landmark initiative and referendum system and further erode the public’s confidence in the institutions of government,” Chairman Tiernan concluded.
