18 DAYS AND COUNTING…
Every day that Governor Kulongoski delays on signing the bills
means another day that Oregonians are denied their Constitutional rights
Portland, Ore. – Oregon Republican Party Chairman Bob Tiernan again today called on Governor Kulongoski to keep his promise to the people of Oregon and sign the massive tax increase bills passed by the Legislature this session and allow the referendum process to begin. The bills have been on the Governor’s desk since the Legislature adjourned on Monday, June 29th.
“Unfortunately the Governor’s tactics are no surprise. They are part of the Democrats’ attack on the rights of Oregonians through a campaign of denial, deceit and delay. When the Governor was first pressured to sign these bills, he said he’d get to them when he got to them. Then last week, he told the people of Oregon that he would sign them this week. Now that the time has come, he is saying he will sign them next week. However, I believe the only thing Oregonians will get from the Governor next week is more delay tactics and obstruction of their Constitutional rights,” said Chairman Tiernan.
Oregon citizens have ninety days from the adjournment of the Legislature to collect the necessary signatures to refer measures passed by the Legislature to the voters. However, the referendum process cannot begin until the bills are signed by the Governor and his current actions are significantly reducing the amount of time Oregonians will have to gather signatures to refer the measures.
“The time for excuses and delays is over. The people of Oregon deserve the opportunity to participate in the political process and voice their opposition to these job-killing tax increases. Each day the Governor stalls and refuses to sign these bills means another day that Oregonians are denied their Constitutional rights. Enough with the games, Governor, sign the bills,” concluded Chairman Tiernan.
Today marks the 18th day that Governor Kulongoski has had the bills and chosen not to sign them.
